Straight-shank hooks: Swivel drop-shot hooks
A drop-shot hook whose eye is a swivel: the hook turns freely on the leader, so a nose-hooked bait that spins on the drop or in current does not twist the line, and the hook always hangs level. The hook itself is a straight-shank drop-shot hook (or a wide-gap version for bigger baits); the swivel is the only difference, and it is why almost every hook sold "with a swivel" is a drop-shot hook.
| Item | Detail |
|---|---|
| Shape | Drop-shot hook on a barrel or ball-bearing swivel (VMC SpinShot, Gamakatsu Swivel Shot); wide-gap and worm-hook versions for bigger baits |
| Wire | Finesse, forged; wide-gap versions in standard wire |
| Sizes | #4–1/0; #2 and #1 most |
| Baits | 3–4.5" (7.5–11.5 cm) finesse worms, minnows; the wide-gap ones take 5–6" (13–15 cm) worms and flukes |
| Tie | Leader through the top eye of the swivel, tag end out of the bottom eye to the weight: no Palomar needed |
| Rigs | Finesse drop shot, power drop shot, drifting drop shot in current |
| Not this | A swivel on a Texas-rig hook with a sinker above it is the Tokyo rig, a different rig |
If the leader twists into a spring, switch to the swivel hook before you switch baits.
