Why do crappie get so hard to catch in midsummer?

Heat, not laziness. Once surface water passes about 26 °C (79 °F), crappie slide out of the shallows and stack at the thermocline — commonly 4–8 m (13–26 ft) down — where temperature and oxygen are both tolerable. Metabolism is actually high in summer, so the fish do feed hard, but in short windows and at depth: early morning, late evening, and after dark. The fish did not disappear; they compressed into a narrow depth band over open water, which is a job for electronics rather than shoreline casting.
