Why do the big pike disappear from the shallows every summer?

Because temperature preference in pike splits by size: small pike tolerate — even thrive in — 19–21 °C (66–70 °F) weedy shallows, while large pike physiologically prefer 10–15 °C (50–59 °F) and start paying a real metabolic penalty above about 21 °C (70 °F). A big body in warm water burns oxygen and calories faster than its gills and stomach can bank them, so the trophies slide out to deep weedlines, thermocline edges, main-lake humps, and open-basin cisco water. The hammer handles you keep catching in the July cabbage are not proof the big fish left the lake — they are proof you are fishing the size class that can afford to be there.
