Why are so many muskie fisheries stocked?

Because natural recruitment fails easily and demand for the fish is enormous. Shoreline development drains and hardens the marshy bays muskie need; pike fry eat the hatch; and low adult density means a few bad year-classes leave holes a fishery feels for a decade. Agencies in Wisconsin, Minnesota, Ontario, New York, and beyond raise fingerlings to 25–30 cm (10–12 in) — past the most vulnerable sizes — before autumn release, and entire celebrated fisheries, including most tiger-muskie waters and southern reservoir programs, exist only through hatcheries. The debate is real too: stocking over wild native strains raised genetic concerns, and modern programs increasingly match local broodstock.
