Why are perch the perfect species to start a kid on?

Because every quirk of perch biology conspires in a beginner's favor. They feed in daylight, on banker's hours — no dawn alarms; they school in the hundreds, so one fish means dozens more and the action stays steady; they live near shore, docks, and easy flats much of the year; the gear is a light rod, small hooks, and a worm; and the competition instinct means enthusiasm out-fishes finesse. Even their flaws teach well: the tap-tap bite trains real bite detection, and the first stolen minnow is a lesson in patience. Add that they are safe to handle (mind the dorsal spines), excellent to eat, and open almost everywhere — no species converts a curious kid into an angler faster.
