Where are pike in the weeks before they spawn?
Staged at the doors of their spawning marshes: under late ice and through ice-out, pike stack along the first drops and channel edges outside shallow, weedy bays, creek mouths, and flooded wetlands, waiting on temperature. The fish are concentrated, the biggest females of the year are present, and metabolism is waking up — which is why late-ice tip-up fishing outside a known spawning bay is quietly one of the best trophy windows on the calendar. Find last year's dead reeds and the soft-bottom bay behind them, then fish the deeper lip just outside.
