What is the late-summer oxygen squeeze?

By late summer a fertile stratified lake is being pinched from both ends: the warm surface layer may exceed the muskie's comfort and safe-release temperatures, while the deep water below the thermocline has burned through its oxygen and become uninhabitable. The livable band can compress to a few meters of mid-depth water, and fish, bait, and thermocline all stack there together. That compression concentrates muskie beautifully — and it is precisely when the warm-water release-mortality rules apply hardest, because a fish fought out of a narrow oxygen band has nowhere good to recover. Fish the squeeze early and late in the day, and let the surface-temperature line make your go/no-go call.
