Is the pike really the earliest spawner among gamefish?

Among the classic freshwater gamefish, essentially yes: pike move into flooded marshes at or even before ice-out and spawn at 4–10 °C (39–50 °F), weeks ahead of walleye, a month or more ahead of smallmouth, and two months ahead of largemouth in the same latitude. The whole pike year cascades from that head start — eggs hatch as prey species are just staging to spawn, so young pike get first-mover advantage on every other species' fry. When you time a pike season, count forward from ice-out, not from the calendar.
