How does fall turnover affect muskie fishing?

When surface water cools to match the depths and the lake mixes, the stable summer structure — thermocline, oxygen layers, predictable bait depth — collapses in days. Fish and forage that were stacked on temperature edges scatter through the whole water column, and fishing on the turning lake genuinely goes tough for one to three weeks; the water often looks the part, murky with a sulfur smell. Two workarounds: fish lakes on a rotation, because small shallow lakes turn earlier and deep clear ones later, so something in the region is always stable; or fish rivers, which never stratify and never turn. Post-turnover is a reward, not a wake — the whole lake reoxygenates and the fall trophy feed follows directly.
