How deep do crappie hold in midwinter?
The default midwinter home is the soft-bottomed main basin — commonly 6–12 m (20–40 ft) in natural northern lakes — but the fish are rarely on the bottom. Schools hover well off it, often 2–5 m (7–16 ft) up, tracking the daily vertical migration of zooplankton, and the whole school's depth can shift by meters between morning and dusk. That is why winter crappie fishing is a sonar game: drill, drop the transducer, and only fish holes that show suspended marks. Mind the barotrauma line, too — release fish caught much beyond 9 m (30 ft) rarely survive.
