Do pike defend territories?

Not in the nest-guarding sense a bass does — pike defend no ground for its own sake. What they contest is prime real estate: the best ambush sites in a lake are limited, and larger pike displace smaller ones from them through straightforward intimidation, backed by the very real threat of being eaten. The result looks like territory — the same class of big fish keeps turning up at the same inside turn — but it is a dominance queue for a feeding position, not a defended border. That distinction matters to anglers: the spot itself is the asset, and it never stays vacant.
