Can smallmouth see my boat? Does boat noise matter?
In the clear water smallmouth favor, yes on both counts — and more than for most species. A fish holding on a shallow flat or clear reef can see a hull, a shadow, and a waving rod tip; sound-wise, trolling-motor bursts and anything dropped on the deck transmit straight into calm water. That is why long casts, drifting with the wind, and quiet feet catch more clear-water smallmouth. In waves, stain, or 8 m+ (26 ft+) of water the boat matters far less.
