Hard baits: Multi-jointed swimbaits

A fish-shaped hard body segmented into three to seven sections (two to six hinges). Whereas a single-joint glide bait glides wide from side to side and requires angler input to turn, a multi-jointed swimbait transfers water pressure progressively down its articulated spine—producing a tight, high-frequency, lifelike sinusoidal (snake-like) swimming motion on a plain steady retrieve. Like single-joint glides, multi-jointed swimbaits span both Finesse/Compact (75–125 mm) and Full-Size/Magnum (150–250+ mm) tackle classes.

Why Multi-Jointed Swimbaits Win When Glides Stop Getting Bit
  • The "No-Rod-Input" Steady Retrieve Rule: On a multi-jointed swimbait, the multiple hinges generate all the action automatically. Avoid snapping the rod tip like a jerkbait—sharp rod jerks fold the 3–5 segments in half and cause the front treble hook to grab the main line. Instead, let the reel do 100% of the work.
  • High-Speed "Burn-and-Kill" (Stop-and-Go): Because multi-jointed baits track dead straight without blowing out on a fast retrieve, one of the deadliest tactics in clear water is to burn the reel handle as fast as you can for 5–8 turns, then freeze the handle completely for 1 second. Trailing smallmouth, largemouth, and pike cannot resist crashing the bait at the exact instant the fleeing prey stalls.
