Will walleye eat a dead minnow — and do they eat fish eggs or scuds?
A dead minnow, readily — with conditions. Walleye inspect a bait and let smell and taste make the final call, which is why a dead or salted minnow on a jig, a minnow head on a spoon, or a dead minnow on a set line under the ice all catch fish, especially in cold water when nothing is chasing. It is scavenging of convenience, though, not a pike-style habit: the bait should be fresh, and a lively minnow usually wins when fish are active. Fish eggs are not part of the picture — the walleye scatters its own and leaves, and it is other fish that eat them. Scuds are food for young walleye; an adult that turns to invertebrates wants bigger packets, such as mayfly larvae and leeches.
