Why is crappie fishing great one year and dead two years later?
Boom-and-bust year classes. Crappie spawning success swings wildly with spring weather — a stable warm spring floods the lake with fry, a cold windy one nearly zeroes the hatch — and a strong year class then dominates the catch for years as it grows through keeper size. Many lakes therefore cycle: two or three fat years as a big cohort matures, then lean years until the next boom. The honest implication is that lake choice by recent year-class strength often matters more than tactics, and the state or provincial survey data telling you which lakes had strong hatches is worth more than any lure.
