Why do perch keep biting the tail off my minnow?

Because tail-first is the perch's attack plan, not bad luck. With a small mouth and a smaller throat, a perch cripples a minnow from behind, then repositions it head-first to swallow — so the first grab lands on the tail, exactly where most anglers leave nothing but bait. The fix is to put the hook where the attack lands: hook the minnow through the tail or back half, or fish a mid-bait stinger, and the thief becomes the caught. It is the same reason a perch stealing bait feels like tiny snips rather than a pull — you are feeling the crippling bites, not a swallow.
