Why do muskie seasons open so late in spring?
The closed season is a spawning shield, sized to muskie biology. Pre-spawn and spawning fish are concentrated in a few known shallow bays, easy to find and brutally easy to overfish, and a spring-caught female is carrying the next generation of a population that averages maybe one adult per few hectares. So the range's heartland waits: much of Ontario opens the first or third Saturday of June depending on zone, Wisconsin's north in late May, Minnesota in early June — dates set weeks after typical spawn completion so post-spawn fish have recovered. The dates differ lake to lake and year to year in print, so the regulation booklet, not habit, is the authority every spring.
