What does the spring rainbow trout run look like?

Lake- and sea-run rainbows push into tributary rivers as flows rise and water climbs through 6–12 °C (43–54 °F) — on Great Lakes tributaries this is the famous "steelhead" run, fish of 2–6 kg (4–13 lb) stacking in pools and pushing upstream in pulses that follow rain. Females cut redds in gravel tailouts; males compete alongside. For anglers this concentrates the year's biggest rainbows into small water, which is exactly why ethics and law both tighten here: many jurisdictions close spawning reaches, and where fishing is open, target staging pools and traveling fish rather than paired fish working visible redds. At 44°N the run peaks around mid-April; timing slides two-plus weeks later per few degrees of latitude north.
