What is the best time of day through the ice — and why not dusk?
Banker's hours: a mid-to-late-morning window and another through mid-afternoon, when light over the basin flats is strongest and the sight-grazing schools are moving. Perch are among the most strictly diurnal fish in northern lakes — their cone-built eyes fail as light falls — so the dusk "prime time" every angler is trained to expect belongs to the walleye, which arrives at the same flats precisely because its light-gathering eyes now outclass the perch's. Fish perch through the bright middle of the day without guilt, and when the light starts dying, either switch to walleye tactics or drill toward home.
