Do walleye guard a nest like bass do?

No — the two reproductive strategies could hardly be further apart. A male bass excavates a nest, fans it, and guards eggs and fry for weeks, betting a huge parental investment on a few thousand eggs. A walleye female simply broadcasts hundreds of thousands of eggs — a big female can carry over half a million — over rubble at night, males release milt, and every adult leaves; the eggs' survival is a pure lottery of spring weather. This is why there is no walleye equivalent of bed fishing, why walleye spawning success swings so wildly year to year, and why the ethical debate that surrounds bass bed fishing simply does not map onto walleye — the conservation concern here is harvesting concentrated pre-spawn adults, not disturbing parents.
