Do trout guard their eggs or young like bass do?

No — zero parental care, and the contrast with bass explains a lot about both fisheries. A male largemouth or smallmouth guards its nest and fry for weeks, which is why bed-fishing for bass is so contentious; a female trout covers her eggs with gravel, and both sexes leave, permanently. The trout strategy is protection by burial and by cold: eggs sealed in well-oxygenated gravel need no guard, just months of clean flowing water. Lake trout go further, scattering eggs into rubble and swimming away the same night. The angling implication cuts both ways — there is no guarding parent to exploit after the spawn ends, but disturbing the gravel itself (see redds) does damage no parent will ever repair.
