Do muskie feed in winter?
Yes — metabolism slows sharply but never stops, and ice anglers targeting pike or walleye catch muskie every winter, usually on large dead baits or big jigging lures. Digestion at 2–4 °C (36–39 °F) takes many days, so a winter muskie may eat one substantial meal a week or less. The honest caveat: in much of the muskie's core range — Ontario, Wisconsin, Minnesota — the season is legally closed through winter precisely to protect fish ahead of spawning, so deliberate targeting is off the table. Where winter fishing is legal, fight times under ice are short but cold-air exposure of eyes and gills is its own release hazard.
