Can a muskie caught deep be released safely?

Better than most deep-caught fish, because esocids are physostomes: the swim bladder connects to the gut by a duct, so a muskie can gulp and burp gas rather than being locked into the sealed-bladder barotrauma that ruins deep-caught walleye and bass. A fish trolled up from 10–12 m (33–39 ft) usually equalizes and swims down fine if handled fast. The practical rules still apply: do not hang deep-caught fish vertically, minimize surface time, and if a fish struggles to stay down, hold it upright boat-side and help it swim, nose slightly down. Never fizz a muskie — the duct does the venting a needle pretends to do.
